RODNEY SCHMIDT
Principal Researcher (Finance and Debt)

Before joining the Institute in January 2002, Rodney was a Program Advisor for the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Coordinator of the Vietnam Economic and Environment Management Research Program (VEEM) in Hanoi. He managed research programs in economic and environment policy for IDRC in Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Nepal. Working with local researchers and research institutions in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, he facilitated research projects and helped establish a network of policy-oriented researchers and research institutions. The projects addressed such areas as trade policy reform, trade finance and competitiveness, the origins and impact of the Asian financial crisis and foreign direct investment.
Rodney has been a Research Associate at the NSI for two years. He also worked as International Economist for the International Finance and Economic Analysis Division, Department of Finance.

Rodney holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto. His most recent publications include “Credit and International Competitiveness" (Routledge Press, 2001), and “Efficient Capital Controls” published in the Journal of Economic Studies, 28/3 (2001).
