An
Evening in Honour of Dr. Roy Culpeper
He was called an
“outstanding leader” of great passion and persistence by NSI
co-founder, Gerry Helleiner who, along with other leaders in the
development community as well as friends, family and co-workers,
gathered last month in Ottawa to celebrate Dr. Roy Culpeper’s
23-year career at NSI, 15 of them at the helm of the Institute.

Emceed by IDRC’s Rohinton Medhora, the event
featured heartfelt speeches from distinguished guests such as
the Hon. Flora MacDonald, the Hon. John MacCallum, and Dr.
Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Museum of
Civilization.
Dr. Culpeper announced last fall that he
would be leaving the Institute this summer. In
addition
to
being sought for teaching posts by both
Carleton University and the
University of Ottawa, he has been awarded the prestigious
Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at the Woodrow Wilson Center
for International Scholars in Washington, DC.
Considered
“the world’s premiere academic exchange”, the Fulbright seeks to
promote understanding between Canada and the United States on
issues that transcend borders. Dr. Culpeper’s research will
focus on the challenges of making financial services available
to the poor when he takes up his award in January.
“It is
with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome Dr. Culpepper to
the distinguished group of Canada-U.S. Fulbright scholars,” says
Dr. Michael Hawes, Executive Director of the Canada-U.S.
Fulbright Program. “Dr. Culpepper’s analysis of the impact of
financial sector policies on developing economies in the wake of
the global economic crisis is both timely and necessary.”
To further commemorate Dr. Roy Culpeper’s achievements at NSI,
The North-South Institute Scholarship in International
Development was also launched at the May event. The scholarship
will be awarded annually to a master’s or
doctoral student
pursuing international development studies at the University of
Ottawa.
