Police Reform in Southern Sudan

While the police and the army both seek to keep the peace, it is understood that their jobs differ. In Southern Sudan however, the roles of the police and the army often overlap largely due to decades of civil war. This overlap has affected the ability of the police to uphold the law, police accountability, as well as the public’s sense of security. Addressing this issue, The North-South Institute has completed a locally-led policy research project on security sector reform in Southern Sudan as part of its work on peacebuilding and conflict prevention. In this podcast, host Lois Ross, NSI Director of Communications, interviews Researcher Abraham Sewonet Abatneh on the need for police reform in Southern Sudan.

The Currency Transaction Tax: New funding solutions for development

One of the fundamental issues in international development is how best to finance development. There are many demands ... climate change, affordable food, health, education ... These demands require new ideas and initiatives. In this podcast, we look at a possible solution to financing development and reducing poverty and inequality. The North-South Institute has completed compelling and innovative research on a new source of financing for development: The Currency Transaction Tax or CTT. The CTT proposes a small levy on foreign exchange transactions using the money for international development and other projects addressing global issues. In this episode host Lois Ross, NSI Director of Communications, interviews Principal Researchers Rodney Schmidt and John W. Foster on the feasibility of the Currency Transaction Tax.

Episode #1 –  During the past few years, The North South Institute has been engaged in a project called “Southern Perspectives on Reforming the International Development Architecture”.  Typically, decisions about international aid and development are made by northern donors.  Too often, southern voices are not a significant part of the dialogue.  This project turns that model upside down, and asks researchers in the South what needs to be changed.

This first episode takes a look at the Southern Perspectives Project, why it was started, the issues it reveals, and some compelling thoughts by participants from the South.
