Governance, Civil Society, and Conflict

Title of Project

We the Peoples 2006-2008

Key Staff Involved John W. Foster, Pera Wells, WFUNA (World Federation of UN Associations)
Research Period June 2006 - Jan 2008
Output Global survey, workshop and report; national surveys, workshops and reports

This project builds on the previous four years’ work. As in the past, We the peoples… 2006 and 2007 will focus on monitoring, informing and encouraging the contribution of civil society organizations as part of the continuing mobilization to make poverty history.

The project will aim to result in increased attention to the mid-term review in 2007 of progress towards achieving the MDGs, and ahead of the G-8 meetings in Germany.

There will be four elements:

1.Taking stock: NSI will map civil society evaluations of the achievements and limitations of the global and national campaigns in 2005, and document the new directions and objectives which are emerging.

2. National focus: in collaboration with civil society organizations and researchers, NSI will solicit the experiences, achievements and policy reform input of CSOs in three or more diverse developing countries – at the national and sub-national levels. These will likely include Mozambique and Zambia.

3. Global inquiry: building on four years of cross-regional multi lingual surveys of CSOs regarding the MDGs, NSI will undertake a further future-oriented global inquiry and examine trends and new developments.

4. Advocacy: utilizing results of national inquiries and the global survey, and involving participants from the national case-studies we will establish overall findings and recommendations, develop an overall report, and contribute to policy enhancement through an international working session and representations to global and national decision-makers.
