SECOND WORKSHOP of the
Policy Response to Unfettered Finance project
Impact and Responses to the Crisis in Low Income
Countries,
International Environment House, Geneva, June 8-9, 2009
While the ongoing global economic
crisis has led to much debate, its impact on low-income
countries (LICs) and vulnerable economies has received
relatively little attention. To bring this issue
forward, the North-South Institute
hosted a two-day workshop June 8-9 that addressed the
impacts of the crisis on low-income countries, as well
as response strategies. Focus was placed on the main
transmission channels of the crisis to LICs. The
workshop brought together approximately 30 members from
international and intergovernmental organizations
including: the Commonwealth Secretariat, World Bank,
UNCTAD and UN-Non-Governmental Liaison Service,
International Labour Organization, International Trade
Center and others; researchers: from London School of
Economics, Graduate Institute of International and
Development Studies and others; policymakers and civil
society members from the North and South and the private
sector.
A detailed workshop report and policy brief will be
available soon.
