Key Staff Involved

Pablo Heidrich, Senior Researcher

Research Period

Phase 1, November 2009 – June 2010

Output

4 working papers, 2 background notes, 1 conference

This project seeks to create a policy dialogue connecting researchers and academics from Latin America and Canada enabling them to jointly elaborate, discuss and disseminate studies on the developmental impacts of this bilateral economic relationship.

Project developers include the North-South Institute (NSI), the Latin American Trade Network (LATN), and the Red Mercosur. NSI facilitates discussions in this Dialogue between Canadian and Latin American partners.

LATN (www.latn.org.ar) has over 120 partners in 19 countries, with offices in Buenos Aires, Lima, Rio de Janeiro and San José (Costa Rica). Together, LATN and NSI have already produced an issue of LATN Nexos, a policy newsletter, dedicated to Canadian - Latin American Relations (No. 10, 11/2009).

Red Mercosur (http://www.redmercosur.net) represents more than 30 researchers from 10 leading research universities in the Mercosur countries.

The project's first meeting took place in Ottawa on May 27-28, 2010, at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Internatinal Trade (DFAIT) and attracted Canadian public officials, members of the Latin American the diplomatic community, civil society representatives and other researchers. Participants shared their ongoing research in presentations and discussions on trade, investment, social policy and the environmental aspects of bilateral relations between Canada and Latin American countries. They also explored future work possibilities on selected issues.
