Taskforce on Human Rights in Asia

Feb 7 2013

Thursday, February 7th, 2013
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The North-South Institute Boardroom
500 – 55 Murray Street, Ottawa

This roundtable was the third in a series of three thematic consultations held across Canada to seek insights from Canadians with a wide range of expertise and experience on human rights issues in Asia. Members of the Taskforce are: Pitman Potter (HSBC  Chair in Asian Research, UBC), Joe Ingram (President and CEO, North-South Insitute), Robert Wright (Former ambassador to China in Japan), Sharon Hom (Executive director, Human Rights in China), Doug Horswill (Senior VP, Teck Resources).

Following this final roundtable, and building on the information gathered during the consultations, the Taskforce will produce a report with recommendations geared toward strengthening Canadian engagement with Asian economies on human rights.

The Canadian government’s renewed emphasis on trade with Asia offers a timely opportunity to reflect on its human rights policy towards the region. Knowledge and expertise of community members across Canada are key elements in this process.
