The North-South Institute (NSI) is seeking a creative and highly-motivated individual for the role of Communications Manager to manage the Institute’s communications and outreach activities.
He or she will be responsible for developing and implementing NSI’s annual communications strategy and raise the Institute’s profile. This includes the continual promotion of NSI’s research through ongoing engagement with media and stakeholders, as well as the timely production and public release of research reports and other publications. It also includes carefully managing a budget and the work of contract writers, editors and graphic designers.
The Communications Manager oversees a part-time On-line Communications Officer and both will work collaboratively to improve NSI’s on-line presence.
The North-South Institute is an independent research organization focused on international development. NSI conducts research designed to inform policymakers, stimulate public dialogue, and support efforts to improve the lives of those living in the developing world.
Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Communications Manager has the following responsibilities:
Communications and Outreach
- Provides leadership, direction and guidance on the implementation of strategic communications and media outreach.
- Works with researchers to design and implement communications and outreach strategies and products that support the adoption of research results by decision-makers.
Media and Public Relations
· Promotes NSI’s public profile by ensuring that the Institute as well as its research projects and results are represented in the media.
· Provides strategic communications advice to the President and research staff; prepares the President and staff for media interviews and public events by crafting key messages and speaking notes.
· Acts proactively to identify media opportunities and manage issues.
· Responds to media requests for information and interviews.
· Prepares and disseminates news releases and media advisories.
- Expands and maintains list of media contacts.
- Performs media monitoring.
- Collaborates with the Events Manager, to support book launches and other public events (roundtables, conferences).
Publications
- Designs, plans and manages NSI’s publication activities. Sets production schedule and ensures on time and on budget delivery.
- Responsible for the management and production of NSI’s publications, including the Canadian Development Report, annual report, monthly e-newsletter, policy briefs and other reports showcasing NSI’s research findings.
- Manages the production of corporate marketing and fundraising materials.
Website
- Leads and oversees the content development for NSI’s website in coordination with the On-line Communications Officer and in consultation with NSI’s researchers.
- Develops and implements a social media strategy (e.g. facebook, twitter, youtube, etc.) with the support of the On-line Communications Officer.
Other
- Member of NSI’s Strategic Committee.
- Reports bi-annually to the Board of Directors on communication activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the President and CEO.
Skills and Qualifications:
- A post-secondary degree in Communications/Journalism/Public Affairs or an equivalent combination of education and communications experience.
- 5- 7 years of progressive experience in areas including communications planning, publications, website management, media relations and outreach.
- Fluency in both official languages (French and English) is essential; knowledge of other languages used in developing countries is an asset.
- Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a small team and to collaborate with others.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office software. Knowledge of Adobe software an asset.
- Commitment to international development and NSI’s objectives.
- Experience working in international development is an asset, as well as experience working in a developing country and/or in a multicultural context.
- Experience working in an academic setting an asset.
- Familiarity with online media and web design
This is a full-time position. Salary range is $58,407 - $64,657 depending on experience and qualifications.
