Former World Bank Executive Joseph K. Ingram to take the helm in August
Ottawa, March 30, 2010 – The Board of Directors of The North-South Institute (NSI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph K. Ingram as NSI's next President and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 15, 2010. Mr. Ingram, a Canadian, comes to NSI after a thirty-year career at the World Bank, serving in a variety of senior management positions, most recently as the Bank's Special Representative to the World Trade Organization and the UN specialized agencies in Geneva. Since leaving the bank he has been working as a consultant with CIDA, the World Trade Organization and the World Bank on a number of development issues, particularly, globalization, development and human rights, and trade facilitation. Mr. Ingram began his career at SUCO/CUSO (Solidarité, Union, Coopération/Canadian University Service Overseas) and spent four years at the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa and Beirut before joining the Bank.
"Mr. Ingram brings a depth of international experience and understanding of the kinds of development issues that inform NSI's work. We are pleased he has accepted our invitation to lead NSI into the future," says Board Chair, Gilbert Winham. "I know he will build on the Institute’s considerable reputation and success, for which, the NSI’s current President and Chief Executive Officer is largely responsible."
Last fall, Dr. Roy Culpeper announced he was stepping down as head of the Institute after a 15–year tenure. Under his leadership, NSI launched a number of innovative projects including its annual Canadian Development Report, which continues to be a valued contribution to the field of development research for a fairer world.
"We welcome Mr. Ingram to NSI," says Dr. Culpeper, "I know his great passion and commitment to development will infuse his work at NSI and I look forward to supporting him during this important transition in the life of the Institute." To do it, Dr. Culpeper has agreed to continue at the helm of NSI until Mr. Ingram joins in mid-August.
"NSI is a respected Institute in the world and, as such, I think it is uniquely placed to have a tremendous impact on international development issues that matter to NSI and to the world," says Mr. Ingram. "I look forward to working with NSI staff and with existing as well as new partners to help make a difference in development through practical and relevant policy research."
