The Labour Impact of Canadian Mining in Latin America

Published: April 3, 2013

Labour impacts from large-scale mining investments are reviewed here using a database made up of 66 Canadian owned project in Latin America. The findings show that most jobs are highly paid and done by nationals or local workers. Working conditions are however harsh and very demanding. Claims of training and hiring local labour as part of CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives are invalid, as such practices follow instead purely business rationales.
